We All Need Nutritional Supplements

Why Do We Need Supplements?

Contrary to popular opinion, nutritional supplements are not “Drugs”.  They do not require a Doctor’s prescription to use them, nor do they require a Pharmaceutical license to market them. They are nutrients (Vitamins/Minerals) extracted from plants and veggies and put into a form that can be easily be used by the body. They put back in the body the essential nutrients you do not (or cannot) get from the foods you eat. They “supplement” what your body no longer produces in sufficient amounts, as you age.

However, were a serious health challenge exist nutritional supplements can help to restore the body to a place of balance and eliminate the sickness. But, it’s probably going to take more than one thing, or even two. In fact, it might take between 5-10 supplements to restore your health. If there is a “serious” health issue on the table, it will take much more time and effort because they are not meant to address symptoms.

Often most people who aren’t in a health crisis wonder why they need to take a supplement. “I feel fine. Why would I need to take anything?” I am not sick? Oh I eat balance diet and so on.

Here are the top reasons why it is important for everyone to take nutritional food supplements:

1. Depleted Soils. Even if you eat a healthy, predominantly plant-based diet with lots of fruit and vegetables, chances are good (unless you’re consuming everything organic) the food comes from soils that have insufficient mineral content. When foods are grown over and over again in the same soils, the mineral content of that soil becomes depleted over time. This is ANOTHER reason why it is so vitally important to consume organic foods as much as possible. Our soils are already depleted of natural minerals because of excessive cultivation and soil erosion.

2. Long Time of Delivery. You will notice that an increasing amount of produce finding its way to your town or village or grocery store comes from other States, town and Villages. Some takes at least one week from the time of harvesting to the consumer. If you think your favorite mango or pineapple was just cut at its peak ripeness, then immediately boxed, rushed to the airport and shipped overnight to your favorite grocery store, you’re sadly mistaken.  Sometimes, foods are picked weeks and even MONTHS before we see it on our stores and markets. Within this period in transit, you think the produce still maintains the same nutritional value as at the point of harvesting it? So much for obtaining the maximum amount of nutrition! Hence it is always advisable that you food as possible from local growers to reduce transit time and improve the nutritional value of the food they’re eating.

3. Cooking Method. We are all in the habit cooking our food “to death,” resulting in a massive loss of nutritional value, meaning far fewer vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and enzymes to go around. What’s more, eating these depleted foods over time creates its own set of health problems. Cooking does “kill” the food, resulting in lost nutrition. We eat “dead foods” i.e. foods devoid of Nutrients, e.g. polished Rice, white bread, gari, etc

3. Use of Fertilizers and Chemicals in Agriculture: We eat Foods grown with artificial Fertilizers and Chemicals from pesticides and herbicides, resulting in the build-up of “free radicals” in our bodies!

5. Not Eating Regular Meals. So many people skip meals. Grabbing 5Alive juice  and meat-pie or doughnut while rushing to work does NOT make a meal. For your lunch you rush for fast food and you come home late at night to consume full load of Eba and Egusi soup putting undue stress on the digestive system and will eventually cause a lot of uncomfortable symptoms – pot belly will build and weight gain.

6.  Normal Aging  and Digestion Issues. As we age, our bodies produce fewer enzymes, including all the important ones needed to properly digest and assimilate the foods we eat. Eventually, this results in “common” stomach complaints, like reflux, heartburn, upset stomach and chronic constipation.

7. Stress Depletes Immune System. Of course we all lead busy lives and some of us are busier than others! So much commitments to your family, school, work, community, faith and other obligations, our lives are stressed to the maximum! All of this stress takes a toll on your body and weakens your immune system. Taking supplements can help to bridge that gap and give your body some of the nutrition it needs to function optimally.

8.  Unhealthy Lifestyles: Many of us are seriously engaged in unhealthy lifestyles today(which many see as civilization): it includes Smoking & excess Alcohol intake; Caffeine (from Coffee and caffeinated drinks), Cola (from drinks) and unsaturated fats, late and/or irregular meals, Insufficient water intake, Poor personal hygiene, Wrong foods & “Fast” foods etc

Because of the excessive intake of fats, sugars and carbohydrates, poor cellular nutrition, free radical damage to our cells, environmental pollution, excessive accumulation of toxins, excessive stress, we have high cases of the so-called ‘Lifestyle Diseases” such as Obesity, Impotency, Infertility, Arthritis, Diabetes, Hypertension, Heart disease, Stroke, Cancers – especially in the Breasts and Prostate glands.

Therefore, the fact that we all need supplementation cannot be overemphasized.
